Commercial Photography and Videography for Finite Solutions Leeds

Some commercial photography and video projects stay in your memory for very different reasons. Sometimes it is the location, sometimes the people, and sometimes it is the opportunity to combine several different creative skills within a single commission.

My work with Finite Solutions, a bespoke high-end home automation company based in Leeds, was one of those projects.

During my time working in the UK, I was commissioned by Finite Solutions to create a combination of professional photography and promotional video content for their website and marketing material.

Looking back at the project now, one thing that particularly stands out is how well it combined two areas of my work: photography and videography. Even more satisfying is discovering that some of the video content I produced is still being used by the company today.

Working with a High-End Home Automation Company

Finite Solutions operates at the luxury end of the residential technology market, creating bespoke systems that integrate technology into high-end homes.

At the time I worked with the company, I was told that its clients included some extremely high-profile and wealthy individuals, including the owners of the ASDA supermarket chain.

That certainly gave me an insight into the calibre of projects the company was involved with.

The work wasn’t simply about installing a few smart devices around a house. Finite Solutions was creating sophisticated, integrated systems incorporating areas such as lighting, entertainment, security, heating, home cinema and multi-room audio and video.

The company’s current website continues that same philosophy, describing smart-home systems that bring together lighting, heating and cooling, security, shades, audio-visual systems and entrance controls into a unified system. Finite Solutions currently describes itself as having more than 21 years of experience in the industry.

For me, this made the project particularly interesting from a visual perspective.

The photography and video needed to reflect the quality and sophistication of the business while also communicating the people and expertise behind the company.

One of the aspects I particularly enjoyed about the Finite Solutions commission was being able to combine photography and videography rather than treating them as two completely separate projects.

Commercial clients often need a wide variety of visual material. A website may require high-quality photographs, while the same company can benefit from promotional films, interviews and video content for marketing.

Being able to provide both meant that I could approach the project as a complete visual production rather than simply turning up to take photographs.

The photography provided Finite Solutions with professional images for its website and promotional material, while the video gave potential clients an opportunity to see and hear directly from the people behind the company.

For a business operating in the luxury home automation sector, that combination was particularly useful.

Much of the technology itself is designed to be discreet. Speakers can be concealed within ceilings, screens can disappear into furniture or walls, and lighting, heating and security can all be controlled as part of a single integrated system.

The photography therefore needed to communicate the quality of the finished environment rather than simply document pieces of technology.

Video added another dimension by allowing the company to explain what it did and, importantly, put a human face to the business.

Training a Company Director to Present on Camera

One of the most enjoyable parts of the project was producing the interview-style videos.

There was, however, a small challenge.

I wasn’t working with a professional presenter. One of the company’s directors was going to appear in the videos, and I had a relatively short amount of time to help him become comfortable in front of the camera.

Fortunately, he turned out to be a natural.

I gave him some basic guidance on presentation, positioning, delivery and how to talk naturally to the camera rather than sounding as though he was reading a carefully prepared script.

Once we started filming, he quickly found his rhythm.

This is one of the aspects of corporate videography that can sometimes be overlooked. Producing a successful interview isn’t simply a matter of putting a camera on a tripod and pressing record.

The person being interviewed needs to feel comfortable.

A good corporate videographer needs to be able to direct the person in front of the camera without making the presentation feel forced or over-rehearsed.

In this case, the director had a huge advantage: he knew the business and its technology inside out.

My job was simply to help him communicate that knowledge effectively.

And he really was a natural.

Making the Most of a Short Production

Another reason the project stands out is that everything had to be achieved within a relatively short period of time.

Commercial productions often involve much more than the actual time spent taking photographs or recording video.

There are people to organise, locations to prepare, equipment to set up, lighting to consider and, in the case of interviews, presenters to prepare.

Being able to work across both photography and video made it possible to make much better use of the available production time.

Once the cameras, lighting and locations were ready, I could move between still photography and video rather than requiring completely separate production sessions.

That is one of the reasons I have always found having both skill sets so useful.

Photography and videography are different disciplines, but they complement each other extremely well in a commercial environment.

A Pleasant Surprise Years Later

Commercial Photography Leeds

Perhaps the most satisfying part of this particular project came much later.

When I recently revisited the Finite Solutions website, I was genuinely surprised to discover that the banner video I produced for them is still being used on their homepage.

Even more pleasingly, I noticed that two of the interview-style videos produced during the same project are also still featured on the website.

That was a fantastic discovery.

Commercial websites change constantly. Companies redesign their websites, update their branding, replace marketing material and move on to new campaigns.

Video content can have a surprisingly short lifespan.

So when you discover that something you produced years ago is still being used prominently by a client, it is extremely satisfying.

It suggests that the content has achieved exactly what it was intended to achieve.

It still works.

Creating Content That Has Lasting Value

This project reminded me that good commercial photography and video isn’t necessarily about creating something that looks impressive for a few months.

The best content can continue to provide value for years.

Finite Solutions’ current website still focuses heavily on bespoke smart-home automation, home cinema, lighting, security and multi-room audio-visual systems. The company now operates from several UK locations, including Leeds, and continues to position itself around high-end, integrated technology solutions.

That makes seeing my original video content still being used particularly rewarding.

The videos weren’t created simply as a record of the company at that particular moment.

They were created to communicate what Finite Solutions did, introduce the people behind the business and help potential customers understand the company’s approach.

Years later, they are still doing that job.

The Value of Combining Photography and Video

For me, the Finite Solutions project is a good example of why having multiple creative skills can be such an advantage when working with commercial clients.

I was able to provide professional photography, produce promotional videos and, within a relatively short period of time, help one of the company’s directors become confident presenting on camera.

Those skills worked together rather than existing as separate services.

Photography gives a company a visual identity.

Video allows people to hear the story behind the business.

Interview content can establish trust and personality.

Together, they can create a much stronger marketing presence than any one of those elements can achieve on its own.

Looking Back at the Finite Solutions Project

Looking back, I remember the Finite Solutions commission as a particularly enjoyable commercial project.

It was a chance to work with a company operating in an interesting and highly specialised sector, producing visual content for a sophisticated luxury market.

But what makes the project especially memorable now is the longevity of the work.

To revisit a company’s website years later and discover that the banner video you created is still there — along with two of the interview videos — is a very welcome surprise.

And perhaps the most amusing part is remembering how quickly one of the company’s directors took to presenting.

With only a short time to prepare him, I wasn’t sure quite what to expect.

As it turned out, there was very little to worry about.

He was a natural.

Commercial Photography and Videography

My work with Finite Solutions is one example of the commercial photography and video production projects I have undertaken during my career in the UK and Spain.

Being able to combine professional photography, corporate videography, interview production and creative direction allows me to provide businesses with a much broader range of visual content.

From corporate photography and promotional films to website imagery and interview videos, the aim is always the same: to create professional content that represents the quality of the business and, ideally, continues to provide value long after the production itself has finished.

The Finite Solutions project is a particularly good example.

Years later, the photographs and videos are still part of the company’s online presence.

For a photographer and videographer, it is difficult to ask for a better legacy than that.
